UIDAI Tools That Improve Aadhaar Control
Virtual ID
A temporary, revocable 16-digit number that can replace the Aadhaar number in supported flows.
Biometric Lock
Locks fingerprint, iris and face modalities against biometric authentication until unlocked or disabled.
Aadhaar Number Lock
UIDAI also provides a separate mechanism to lock or unlock use of the Aadhaar number for authentication.
Masked Aadhaar
Hides the first eight digits of the Aadhaar number in the UIDAI-provided masked copy.
Authentication History
UIDAI provides authentication-history access for Aadhaar number holders through official services.
Registered-Mobile Security
Many security features use authentication tied to the registered mobile number.
Biometric Lock and Aadhaar Lock Are Not the Same
| Control | What it blocks | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| Biometric lock | Biometric authentication using fingerprint, iris and face. | UIDAI allows temporary biometric unlock or disabling the lock. |
| Aadhaar-number lock | Authentication using the Aadhaar number itself while locked. | UIDAI documents VID as part of locked-UID authentication and unlock flows. |
Practical Aadhaar Sharing Habits
Share the minimum needed
Do not expose a full Aadhaar copy when the purpose can be met with a safer UIDAI option.
Verify the destination
Enter Aadhaar or OTP only on the intended official or legitimate service.
Never disclose OTPs
An Aadhaar OTP is an authentication secret, not information to give to a helper.
